Bay City Times 1968 Liquidation Story

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on February 2, 2015 by Scott ThedeFebruary 2, 2015

1968 Bay City Times Story About LiquidationMark W. Rummel posted this photo on June 28, 2014 in the Facebook Group “You know you are from Sebewaing, MI when …”.  He said:

“Wow – while looking for something else, I came across this Saginaw News story from 1968, talking with Otto Thede about selling off the assets of the Sebewaing Brewing Company, which had closed in 1965.

His grandson Scott Thede has posted this and SO MUCH MORE on his great Sebewaingbrewingcompany.com page.”

(I’m sure my dad wrote the story for The News, as he was a stringer for them for 20 years.)”

Here are the comments from the post:

Lori Fisher Good photo and caption, too.

Bob Fournier It might have made it in today’s market, especially with micro breweries popping up. The big boys had to get rid of the little brewery’s.

Jennifer Trevillian The second to last paragraph is sad- maybe some day a new micro-brewery will come to Sebewaing. I enjoyed seeing the photo of building again. I remember when they tore it down.

Scott M. Thede That’s my Grandpa! He lived right next to Satows in the green and white house. My guess is he is sitting about where the Sale’s Office was the was immediately next to the Brewmasters test area and is the only remaining building still standing today.

Scott M. Thede Thank you for posting Mark and thank you for the website plug.

Thank you to Mark W. Rummel for this post and all of those who took the time to comment in Facebook.

Sebewaing Beer Cans

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on February 2, 2015 by Scott ThedeFebruary 3, 2015

Sebewaing Can BlueMark W. Rummel posted this photo on June 24, 2014 in the Facebook Group “You know you are from Sebewaing, MI when …”.  He said:

“For sale today on eBay – this is unique: an unopened “Zip & Sip” blue can of Sebewaing Beer. Scott Thede would know for sure, but I’d say this is from 1965 or so, near the end of the brewery’s existence.

The drinker back then opened it from the bottom (maybe he/she didn’t like the “new-fangled” top opener) so it’s empty, but the pull-tab is intact. The seller wants $79.99 as an opening bid (pretty high price) but maybe would sell it for less, if no other offers come forward.

(Actually, it seems to me that many CBWing Beer drinkers opened their cans on the bottom back then, for some reason. It’s good for collectors today, since the top remains unopened, but I wonder why they did that.)

It’s another memory from Sebewaing’s past, and it could be yours, if you’d like it.”

Here are the comments from the post:

Scott M. Thede Coincidentally, I wrote an article on the brewery website about the beer can debut a week before Mark’s post about the Ebay opportunity. To help confirm Mark’s statement, as far as I know, the zip top came out in the last few years of the brewery’s operation. I’d say 1964-1965. I doubt very much that between 1965-1966, they would try something new like this when they were trying to keep their heads up the financial waters. Anything that came out in the way of a zip top can from 1965-1966 was likely using existing inventory. Here is the article on the national can debut and specifically, the Sebewaing Brewing can information with nice pictures. https://sebewaingbrewingcompany.com/the-can-debut/

Mark W Rummel Great story, Scott. I am so glad you are working to keep the Sebewaing Brewery story alive. Scott’s Grandfather Otto Thede ran the brewery for years and lived right next to it.

Thank you to Mark W Rummel for this post.

Early Sebewaing Beer Label on File With Liquor Control Commission

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on February 2, 2015 by Scott ThedeFebruary 2, 2015

Mark W. Rummel posted this photo on June 26, 2014 in the Facebook Group “You know you are from Sebewaing, MI when …”.  He said:

“I found this pretty interesting (I knew it existed, but this is a good explanation:)

“Why is the Archives of Michigan displaying old beer labels? These labels can found within official state records. The Archives received them from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.

“Michigan Public Act 8 of 1933 established the Commission. National Prohibition had been repealed that year, and states debated about alcohol regulation. Two basic systems emerged: The control – or monopoly – system and the licensing – or open state – system. Michigan became one of seventeen states to adopt the former. Under the control system, the State holds a monopoly on liquor sales. In Michigan, the Liquor Control Commission acts as sole wholesaler for all distilled spirits (Beer and wine are exempted from this process and sold through the private sector.). For more information, click Michigan Liquor Control Commission to visit the Commission’s web site.

“The Michigan Liquor Control Commission also oversees licensing for alcohol sellers, manufacturers and distributors in Michigan. The labels on this page were submitted to the Commission as part of a licensing requirement. Today, they provide a unique look into the past of Michigan brewing.”

Here’s what they said about our town’s brewery:”

Mark W Rummel That was a pretty classy label in the mid-1930s, I’d say…

Bob Fournier Interesting
