The “Ellen Taschner” Report

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on March 24, 2014 by Scott ThedeOctober 7, 2014

Ellen TaschnerIn 1968, Ellen Taschner, wife of Charles Taschner of Owendale, and brother-in-law to long time employee of the brewery Frank Taschner of Sebewaing, participated in a class doing research work about Michigan history.  Ellen noticed a void of materials in local libraries about this topic and decided to select a local industry.  Lucky for us she selected the Sebewaing Brewing Company.  Part of her wish was to have this research be available at a local library.  That is exactly where this report was found, in a local library of where else, Sebewaing!  Ellen’s goal was realized and it is available for reading by anyone that visit the vertical files.  Even better, the paper is available right here where it can be easily read by anyone with a computer and the Internet.  This type of access must have surely exceeded her imagination at the time.

Some quick commentEllenTaschnerReportImages on this report.  There is substantial detail on the life span of the brewery but more importantly, especially before Prohibition.  This period is relatively unknown except for a few articles here and there, not very much detail is known.  The fact that Ellen did this research in 1968 and was able to speak with two former employees of the brewery, one a long time president and general manager (A. E. Mast) and another long time employee (Frank Taschner) was instrumental in the amount of detail she was able to gather.  In a few areas of the reports, some beer label names, small bits of content, or dates required some minor corrections.  The report was kept intact but comments made in the right margin in order to preserve the author’s writing.

From what could be researched on-line, Ellen passed away in January of 1971.  However, she left this gift to all of us so thank you Ellen for all of your work helping to document the memory of the Sebewaing Brewing Company.

It’s In the Label!

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on March 18, 2014 by Scott ThedeOctober 7, 2014

Some of the Sebe8353069363_a0c4cd9a6b_owaing Brewing Company bottle body labels had numbers along the left and right side (see the picture on the left).  The three labels with this feature are Sebewaing, Sport, and Old Style (lion’s head, not the flying goose).  The body labels like thPOM Bundled Labelse neck labels were shipped and stored in bundles that were held together with cotton string (see the sample bundle on the right).  Pride of Michigan (P.O.M.) was a label without numbers, but shows what a bundle of labels looks like).

Once loaded in the labeling machine, I would imagine the string was cut and the machine would apply the labels to the bottle body and neck.  However, bSportefore the body labels were placed in the machine, they were clamped in a vise and a saw was used to notch both side of the label with the date of bottling.  The left side was to mark the day and the right side marked the month.  So if beer was bottled on 8/23 of a year, the left side would have a notch at the 20 and 3 and the right side a notch at 8.  This was Sebewaing’s version of born on dating like what Anheuser-Busch first introduced in their beer line during the 1990’s.

Buyers beware when you see a bottle for sale on E-bay or somewhere else of one of these three labels, look for notches and then ask for a picture of the bottom of the bottle that should reveal a date before 1966.  Pictured left here is an example of a bottle that probably had unused labels glued on by someone trying to pass it off as authentic.

Finished First Leg of Research

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on March 16, 2014 by Scott ThedeOctober 7, 2014

One of my goals in researching the brewery was to go through all of the archive film of the Sebewaing Blade from 1933-1966. I am happy to say that after a recent visit of many to the Sebewaing Library, I have completed this goal. As in my past visits, I located additional materials that will be posted on the timeline and in the source page within the next week.

My quest for photos is still a high priority. I have been asking people for piictures of anything related to the brewery and there have been some responses. However, at this time, I do not have enough photos of the inside and outside to do a project that I thought would be a wonderful addition to the history of the brewery. The project is a virtual walk through of the different areas in and around the brewery buildings with actual room dimensions and elevations. The BadAxeHuronDailyTribuneage of digital cameras and camcorders would have made this an easy task 35-40 years ago. I have to believe that someone had the foresight to take photos and perhaps even some film and these treasures could be out there somewhere waiting to be discovered or dusted off and brought back to life.

My next step is to request the help of the the Huron Daily Tribune to see if they would be willing to run a story of this website and help spread the word for materials related to the brewery. Perhaps this effort will help communicate this request more widespread and to those people that are not as comfortable using the Internet.

Until then, thank you everyone for your help and visiting the site!
