Front of Brewery

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on November 4, 2014 by Scott ThedeNovember 4, 2014

Front of brewery circa 1975Mark W. Rummel posted this photo on April 16, 2013 in the Facebook Group “You know you are from Sebewaing, MI when …”.  He said “Duane Wurst of Pigeon is a top-quality photographer and artist who shares his love for the Thumb. He recently posted a very familiar looking shot of the front of the ole Sebewaing Brewery.

I’m proud to have an original painting and photo of the Charity Island Lighthouse which Duane painted probably 20 years ago, as a Christmas gift from wife Sally. Check out his work, and enjoy this CBWing memory!”

Here are the comments from the post:

Doug Rook I’ll bet that lighthouse needs a second coat by now.

Gloria Jane Jones I saw that bldg for the biggest part of my life..Lived in Seb. the first time when I was four yrs old..Beautiful painting..thought it was the actual picture…sad when the bricks were going down..

Mary Beers Have that same shot only with a boy walking in front of the building. It is hanging on our wall as we speak. Miss the building.

Chuck Sterling The building I work in now has the same kind of freight elevator… And, I always wondered, as I now do again, what came out of the square metal chute?

Mark W Rummel Good question, Chuck. Was it some malt by-product? I remember farm trucks being parked there, receiving a load of stuff through that chute… Any other ideas??

Shawn W Janke My stepfather (deceased) Ralph Ludwig worked there, and I used to fish the river behind it. I caught more suckers there than anywhere.

Jacklyn Hughes This brings back a lot of memories of riding my bike down to my grandparents house or down to dads barbershop right past the brewery. It was sad to see it come down.

Scott M. Thede Answering the question from Chuck Sterling “And, I always wondered, as I now do again, what came out of the square metal chute?” The square chute sat below Mash Tub #1 and was the spent grain chute. The other bin with the cover to the right of the painted pheasant was the malt hopper that attached to the malt elevator. Thank you to Mark W. Rummel for posting the photo and all of those who took the time to comment in Facebook.

Old Style “Lion” Label

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on November 4, 2014 by Scott ThedeNovember 4, 2014

Old Style LabelMark W. Rummel posted this photo on March 8, 2013 in the Facebook Group “You know you are from Sebewaing, MI when …”.  He said “Interesting question: This “Old Style Beer” label is for sale today on eBay. It was a Sebewaing Brewing Company product, I’d say from the early 1940s (due to the “Internal Revenue Tax Paid” line, which was common after Prohibition ended.)

My question: Did anyone know the Brewery made a 32 oz product? That’s the size bottle this label was placed on. I never knew this. I thought all bottles were brown glass 12 oz. long necks then (followed by shorties which were also 12 oz., in the early 1960s.) So this was kinda like a family size bottle, I guess. What was “Old Style” anyway? Does anyone have other ideas?”

Here are the comments from the post:

Arlene Nimtz Schweitzer I have the bottle cap that goes with this.

Mark W Rummel Wow, Arlene, very neat. I just didn’t know much about Old Style. I had heard the name but am not familiar, especially the 32 oz size bottle.

William Harder Huron county also had quartz bottles to I see more of the 32 oz then I do of the 12 oz lion bottles which one is more rare u can pick up a lot of the labels at us beer labels dot com for the third of the price

William Harder I won it

Brewers’ Best Marketing Campaign Photo

Sebewaing Brewing Company Posted on November 4, 2014 by Scott ThedeNovember 4, 2014

brewers best marketing photoMark W. Rummel posted this photo on April 2, 2013 in the Facebook Group “You know you are from Sebewaing, MI when …”.  He said “Here’s a Sebewaing Brewing Company picture I’ve never seen before, for sale today on eBay. It’s a parade float with both Sebewaing (Pheasant) Beer and Brewer’s Best brands shown on the old horse-drawn cart. I believe this is from Sebewaing’s 1953 Centennial (I was there, but only 3.)

The eBay seller from Bay City knows his/her Sebewaing Beer history. It was bought at Otto Thede’s estate sale, the seller says (Otto was Brewmaster for many years and basically lived across the street.) When I wanted to write a history of the brewery while in college, he didn’t want to talk with me about it (I probably don’t blame him.) Now, I wish he would have!

Any other thoughts, folks??”

Here are the comments from the post:

Brian K. Schwartz Too bad that car isn’t around today! That would sure make a sweet piece to show around here!!

Mark W Rummel Yep, Brian, and I wish the Brewery was still there to park it in front of!!!

Doug Rook What, no Clydesdales?

Judy Bergman Weber I was there too.

Brian K. Schwartz I do too, Mark W Rummel. I think that it would do quite well today. My Grandfather, Frank used to haul beer for the brewery. I still remember walking past it on my to and from school.

Doug Rook Hey Brian, I graduated with your dad. Please give him my regards. Haven’t seen him since the 60’s

Brian K. Schwartz Doug: I’ll try to remember the next time I see him. He’s on here but I don’t know how often he checks it

Earl Mast I don’t believe Otto Thede was a brew master. Ringle and Lowery were two I remember.

Thank you to Mark W. Rummel for posting the photo and all of those who took the time to comment in Facebook.
