Mark W. Rummel posted this photo on April 17, 2012 in the Facebook Group “You know you are from Sebewaing, MI when …”. He said “Speaking about the Sebewaing Beer Lion, here is a plaster bust of it, recently for sale on eBay. It’s probably from the late 1930s or early 1940s. I don’t think there are many of these out there… does anyone know more about it?”
I am sure you heard the stories of the Lion that they had back then, haven’t you?
I’ve heard some of them… Alice Pommerenke and others remember some… why not share some here, Fred?
Yes as I understand it they had a Loin as a mascot. I am sure <name removed per their request> could fill us in with more details as she has had access to all the old Sebewaing Blades that went back to forever.
I just know of the Lion mascot. I can ask also Scott M. Thede if he knows more about this with his family being involved with the brewery.
I know that for a time they had a live lion as a mascot that would be at festivals and parades. Not sure about the actual dates that it took place though.
The lions used to be behind Anna Gall’s house. I think they were toothless. I have already told the story about Otto Thede that put the last one across the bumper of his car. He went into a bar, I think, and the people came out to look at it and he warned them since he had that one there must be one more around so they should be careful.
Thank you to Mark W. Rummel for posting the photo and all of those who took the time to comment in Facebook.
